More Advanced Newsreader Usage

If you’re comfortably cruising the newsgroups on your newsreader, maybe you’re ready to do a bit more with it. The basic parts of the Usenet, of course, are the text posts left by various participants. The more advanced parts are the files, or binaries, that can be so efficiently shared over this protocol. You can find just about anything on the Usenet, as long as you know how to start looking. If you chose the right newsreader for the task, this will be one of the easiest imaginable things to accomplish.

Newsgroup articles that contain binaries can be found via various search services. Your newsreader, if it is integrated with these services, can likely search the NewzBin site. This site can provide you with access to specific files by indexing the posts to which that file is contained. If you have a reader that is designed to accommodate this, you’ll simply type in the file for which you’re searching and select the correct post from among the results. Your newsreader will download the file for you, once you find it, even if that means downloading portions from several different articles.

The file will most likely be compressed. Your newsreader may or may not be able to handle decompression for you, but it’s not at all hard to understand. You need a file compression utility. There are paid and free versions available, with one of the more popular products being 7-zip. Windows and Mac OS can both decompress some types of files natively. Linux is very powerful in this regard though, if you’re using Linux, you likely need no explanation about how file compression works. There is a very important step that comes before decompressing the file, however, that you must always perform.

The vast majority of the world’s Internet users are good people. Some of them aren’t and, of that less honorable portion, many like to distribute viruses and worms. Scan every single file you download off of Usenet with a virus scanner. You can scan it when it’s compressed and then rescan it when it’s decompressed, just to be sure. This bit of Internet safety will go a long way toward making your experience far more enjoyable. You’ll find, however, that most of what you download is clean. You can find posts about various topics in much the same way, even on a text-only newsreader.
