Saving Money on College Textbooks

When beginning college, one cost that many people do not expect to be so high is the prices of textbooks. Many textbook bills ring out at upwards of 300 – 400 dollars! Science textbooks especially tend to be among the most expensive books. In general, the cheapest science books are on average 150 dollars. But don’t be alarmed, there are many ways that you can save money on these expensive books.

The best way to save money on college textbooks is by using rental services. What rental services allow you to is to rent the book for a certain period of time for a fraction of the cost of buying the book. While there are other ways to save money on books such as buying used books, there are many advantages that renting books has over all other ways of saving money.

The biggest advantage that renting has over other forms is the cost. When buying used books, you still pay over half of the price a new book. With renting books you pay only a fraction of the price of new books. For example, if a book costs 200 dollars new, renting that book would only cost you approximately 90 dollars. The savings are phenomenal. Also, renting prices are based on particular time frames. If you only need the book for one semester, you pay a certain price that is set for that time frame. When buying used books, you pay for more than you get out of the book. Science textbooks especially are generally only used for one or two semesters. While you use them for only a short amount of time, you have to pay huge amounts of money for them. Unless you are a science major, chances are that you will look at that book for a very short time and then it will sit un-used. While you may only need the book for one semester, you pay for having the book for a lifetime. With renting books, you get exactly what you pay for.

Another advantage of renting books is that you do not have to deal with the hassle of selling books back. Because you only get the book for the time frame that you need it, you do not have the need to sell the book back at the end of the semester. All you do is simply return the book back to where you rented it from. Another hassle that you avoid is having to go to your schools’ bookstore to pick up the books. With renting, you can have your textbooks shipped directly to your home. Also, renting services generally ship faster than sites that allow you to order new or used books. In most cases, you will have the book that you rented in your hands the next day.

Not only can you save money by renting your books, but you can also avoid many of the hassles that accompany book buying. With renting you are guaranteed to have the book that you need for the amount of time that you need it. Renting books prevents you from having to pay huge sums of money for a book that will only be looked at for 4 months.
